- Many famines existed in the British Period due to the UK strategy of increasing cash crops rather than food crops. Yet India was not in such a bad place even in that situation. The real reason was the British didn't care for their Indian colonies and didn't just alleviate the problem.
- But in some cases, famines were produced as a matter of written policy either to drive up crop prices or to help the English granary reserves. One such example is Bengal's great famine of 1943 when the British stopped a ship laden with crop to dock at the port of Bengal and ordered the food to be delivered to the reserve of British stockpiles.
