(i) What type of problems were created in U.S.A. by the expansion of wheat agriculture?
(ii) What was the effect of the place treaty of versailles in Germany?
Answers
Explanation:
- The expansion of wheat agriculture in the Great Plains created major problems. Tractors and machines that had ploughed the earth and harvested the wheat in the 1920s were now clogged with dust, damaged beyond repair. These dust storms came because the early 1930s were years of persistent drought
- The treaty was lengthy, and ultimately did not satisfy any nation. The Versailles Treaty forced Germany to give up territory to Belgium, Czechoslovakia and Poland, return Alsace and Lorraine to France and cede all of its overseas colonies in China, Pacific and Africa to the Allied nations.
There were many problems that were created in US by the expansion of wheat agriculture
The Versailles Treaty was made to punish Germany & attempt to weaken the nation so much that it would not pose a future threat
Explanation:
Expansion of Wheat in the US
- The expansion of wheat production in the USA took place at the end of the 19th century. With the population growth , new technology made the expansion possible.
- To satisfy their needs, tools & implements had been modified. Farmers now used disks ploughs & tractors to clear the land for agriculture. In order to reap & cut harvest, the hydraulic reapers were used. Combined harvesters were used to cut crops at the turn of the 20th century.
- Now, big tracts of land could be ploughed, sown, harvested in a short period of time with power-driven machinery. Yet issues problems had been there. Poor farmers had difficulties in paying taxes. These machines couldn't be afforded. The bank gave credit, but most of them were unable to repay this loan. Many left their farms to find alternative jobs
- Besides, severe dust storms started to blow that led to blinding people, covering fields, choking the cattle, machines were covered with dust, covering rivers and killing fishes, . This was because the entire area had been ploughed & stripped of grass whose roots could have "bounded the soil".
The Treaty of Versailles had the following affects on Germany
- The coal mines in the Saar Basin was to be turned over to France
- The territory of Alsace-Lorraine that Germany had seized in 1871 was given back to France
- Germans were forced "dismantle" "fortifications" along the river "Rhine"
- Germany was forced to respect the Austria's independence.
- Forced Germany to "renounce" "territorial claims" & recognise the Czechoslovakia's indenedence
- Stripped Germany of its colonies in Africa and China
- The German Army was cut to only 100,000 after World War I from 1,9 million troops, and the army was directed to "devote itself solely to peace within the country and to border protection."
- Disarmed the military of Germany, restricting the number of ammunitions & weapons it could possess. It also reduced Germany’s naval forces to abare minimum. Forbid Germany to have an air force, but for up to "100 seaplanes" to work in "mine-sweeping operations"
- Authorised the Allies to conduct war crimes trials against Germany.
- Wanted Germany to accept responsibility for causing “all the loss & damage” that it had inflicted on the Allies.
With the above conditions it led to economic crisis. Because of the former imperial regime's trick, printing of more currency and borrowing extensively to finance its military expenses, Germany was already in serious financial trouble . The new German Government failed to pay-back its in gold-backed marks, which it was required to make as it was burdened with weight of its loans & budget deficits. France put on the pressure by occupying the Ruhr, which was Germany's industrial region. This factor intensified the economic turmoil in Germany and led to the hyper-inflation in 1923 that made the country's currency worthless.
