MAJOR LANDFORMS ON THE EARTH'S SURFACE - DEFINITION

There are a large number of landforms on the surface of the earth. There are also several methods of their classification. According to their relief features, the major landforms are (i) Mountains (ii) Plateaus (iii) Plains, and (iv) Valleys and Basins.

CAUSES OF LAND FORM DEVELOPMENT - SHORTCUT

Structural landforms are created through plate tectonics. When the earth shifts, landforms such as fold mountains, volcanoes and rift valleys can occur. Set of forces operate inside the earth act along the radius from the earth's centre to the surface and are characterised by large-scale uplift or subsidence of land area. These vertical movements are known as Continent building movements. Block mountains, basins, rift valleys are produced by these movements.

CAUSES OF LANDFORM DEVELOPMENT CONTINUED - SHORTCUT

Earthquakes and volcanic activities are described as sudden forces. Volcanic eruptions result in the formation of volcanic mountains, extensive plateaus and also plains. Earthquakes cause formation of lakes.

The forces operating on the surface of the earth are called exogenic or external forces and are described as destructive forces because they cause widespread destruction through weathering and erosion of existing landforms. Landforms of these types include valleys, glacial landforms, etc.
