Mr.Oliver was an Anglo-Indian teacher, who used to teach in a school, located 3 miles away from Shimla. He was a bachelor and was staying alone in the premises of the school. He used to walk down every evening to the Shimla Bazaar and return after dark by taking a shortcut through the pine forest.
He was a courageous man and dd not believe in imaginary or ghost stories. So he never felt any kind of fear while walking through the pine forest at night even though sometimes the weather was windy and the pine trees made eerie and sad sounds.
Once while walking through the pine forest at night, he saw a boy sitting alone on a rock. From his school cap, he could make out that the boy was a hostel student. He was surprised to see the boy sitting alone at that time since the hostel boys were forbidden to move out after dark.
Till the time he is not aware of reality, he has concern for the boy. A moment later, the strange scene frightens him and he runs to save his life. While running from there,he bumped into a watchman, who was again featureless like the boy, he had met earlier.

Oliver Twist Son of Edwin Leeford and Agnes Fleming, he is thought to be an orphan. A dear, grateful, gentle child, who "instead of possessing too little feeling, possessed rather too much." He had not learned "that self-preservation is the first law of nature."
The novel’s protagonist. Oliver is an orphan born in a workhouse, and Dickens uses his situation to criticize public policy toward the poor in 1830s England. Oliver is between nine and twelve years old when the main action of the novel occurs. Though treated with cruelty and surrounded by coarseness for most of his life, he is a pious, innocent child, and his charms draw the attention of several wealthy benefactors. His true identity is the central mystery of the novel.
