Portia is the romantic heroine of the play ''The Merchant of Venice.''She is a rich heiress of Belmont.She has a good combination in traits which is:Beauty and Brain.Everyone appreciates her outer appearance all over the world,making many suitors eager to marry her.She is also known to be practical and resourceful who is capable of taking quick decisions at any situation.She has a very compassionate nature.This comes out clearly from her speech on ''Quality of mercy'' in the court.Though Portia conducts herself in the trail scene with a rare masculine self confidence,she is essentially feminine in nature.When Bassanio chooses the right casket,she is overwhelmed with joy.Her feminine nature is best seen in her absolute self-surrender to him.Portia is a dutiful daughter.She could have told Bassanio about the right casket and even yearns to do so.But she does not betray the terms imposed by her dead father.
