Sue and Johnsy are bosom friends who were closely connected with each other since they share an equal amount of interest in food,art, and the Bohemian life out there in the old Greenwich village even though they hail from distinctly

different places. They lived together at the top of the old three storied building. Sue is the female lead who weaves much of the action in the

otherwise stuck narrative.Johnsy was visited by the cold unseen stranger called pneumonia and is down mentally as well as physically.

It is Sue who is very kind, loyal, sensitive, considerate,affectionate and motherly who takes the initiative to protect and save her dear friend.. Johnsy is much of a repressed type who is very insecure and depressed.she had not hope left in her that she would remain

alive.

She is emotionally dependent on Sue. The motherly Sue provides her reassurances, timely advice, medication and her valuable presence to bring back her lost confidence. Sue is very thoughtful of Johnsy and hence runs pillars to post to keep her physically

stable.she has no fear of dreadful diseases and is determined to stay with her.She even stops whistling thinking that it would disrupt her friend's sleep.

She insists Johnsy to close the window so that she could stop looking at the dismal leaves frantically falling down one after another. Sue is an understanding companion because she

shares Johnsy's dream with the doctor that she really longed to draw the picture of bay of

Naples Sue is selfless she came in search of good prospects.but wasn't ready to leave her friend at times of difficulties. She stood with her friend to fight the stranger. She taught her skills to fight her very self that was hellbent on taking her own life.its because of nutrition and care

that Johnsy survived, reports the physician. It was the extra ordinary will power and presence of mind of Sue that helped Johnston to come back to life.
