Fold Mountains are formed when the compressional forces causes the earth's crust to buckle up just like the table cloth folds up in waves when pressure is applied from both ends. The mountains formed are either old fold mountains which are lower in height and not so sharp as the new fold mountains which are very high, rugged with sharper features. Examples of old fold mountains are the Urals and the Appalachians. The Rockies of North America, the Andes of South America and the Himalayas in Asia are examples of young or new fold mountains.
