Arthropoda is the largest phylum of animal kingdom having jointed appendages .The general features include they are bilaterally symmetrical, triploblastic, segmented,organ-system level of organization and with a true Coelom. The important characteristics of arthropoda are:

(1)ECDYSIS OR MOULTING

It is the process of shedding off the chitinous exoskeleton of arthropods at regular intervals of time.

(2)DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

It is complete and has glands.It is extracellular.

(3)RESPIRATORY STRUCTURES

These include Gills,book-gills, book-lungs and trachelary system.

(4)CIRCULATORY SYSTEM

Open type....poorly developed..

(5)SENSORY STRUCTURES

Antennae,statocyst,and Eyes (Simple/compound).

(6) EXCRETORY SYSTEM

It is through Malphigian tubules, Anteenal glands etc..

(7)REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM

Mostly oviparous and dioecious. Development may be direct or indirect.
