It is so named because it is usually the lens that is closest to the eye when someone looks through the device. ... The amount of magnification depends on the focal length of the eyepiece.

And this dimensions are decided by the width of the eyepiece barrel which goes into the telescope. Therefore the eyepiece used in the telescope of the spectrometer is that eyepiece, which most properly fits in that telescope.
