Pro tip : the four figure grid reference is always seen in L form i.e., first you will write the northings and then eastings.

Northings are the vertical lines connecting north and south while eastings the horizontal lines connecting east and west ... try writing it according to the tip mentioned above

The easiest way to remember this is to find the first number, walking down the hallway (horizontal, x axis, east) and up the stairs (vertical, axis, north).

For example, the number 2 in the diagram below is 19 squares across and 45 squares at the top so, the four-digit grid reference is '1945'.
