The unique features of life are:-
1) Growth :- It is not a defining characteristic because non-living things also grow.Like mountains which increase in size(but here growth is external i.e. adding things on the outside)

2)Reproduction:-It is also not a defining characteristic because sterile organisms cannot reproduce even though they are living. For example male worker bees,infertile couple,mule,henny etc.

3)Consciousness:-It is also not a defining characteristic because brain-dead people cannot respond but still they are living.

4)Metabolism:-It is the only defining characteristic of life because all living organisms exhibits metabolism.Metabolism is the sum total of all chemical reactions taking place inside the body.
