General Characteristics of Bryophytes:

Plants occur in damp and shaded areas. The plant body is thallus like, i.e. prostrate or erect. It is attached to the substratum by rhizoids, which are unicellular or multicellular. They have a root-like, stem-like and leaf-like structure and lack true vegetative structure.

 The gametophytic phase is predominant and ecologically

persistent,i.e.,green,independent and long-lived.

 The sporophytic phase is very short-lived,and completely

dependent upon the gametophyte.

 The gametophytic plant body is either thalloid or differentiated

into the erect axis and lateral appendages.

 Roots are absent in bryophytes, rhizoids perform the function of

roots. Rhizoids are either unicellular & unbranched or

multicellular & branched.
