The five major food groups suggested by ICMR are
1) Cereal grains and products
ex: wheat, rice, flakes, bread, flour
2) Pulses and legumes
ex: Bengal grams, peas(dry), rajma
3) Milk, meat and their products
ex: milk, cheese, egg, chicken, fishmeal
4) Fruits and vegetables
ex: mango, papaya, sweet lime. spinach, mint, carrots, beans, onion
5) Fats and sugars
ex: Butter, ghee, honey, jaggery
These groups are meant to be used to plan a balanced diet as they have various major nutrients and functions to play.
