HELLO MY DEAR FRIEND
IMPORTANCE OF SOIL
SOIL IS THE UPPERMOST LAYER OF EARTH'S CRUST. SOIL IS FORMED OF ROCK PARTICLES AND ORGANIC MATER WHICH IS KNOW AS HUMUS. SOIL IS FORMED SLOWLY AS ROCK ERODES INTO TINY PIECES NEAR THE EARTH'S SURFACE. IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT NATURAL RESOURCE. IT SUPPORTS THE EXISTENCE OF THE LIVING ORGANISMS. WE CAN USE SOIL FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSE IN OUR DAILY LIFE. ALMOST ALL THINGS IN OUR SURROUNDINGS DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY DEPEND ON SOIL. SO, SOIL IS A PRECIOUS NATURAL RESOURCE.
AND SOIL IS A GOOD HABITAT. WE DEPEND ON SOIL FOR AGRICULTURE AND CONSTRUCTION PURPOSE, MAKING UTENSILS , TOYS AND ETC. PLANTS DEPEND ON SOIL FOR NUTRIENTS LIKE MINERAL SALTS AND WATER. SOIL CONTAINS MINERALS. MOST OF THE MINERALS ARE FOUND IN THE SOILS ARE SALTS, SODIUM, CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM AND POTASSIUM CHLORIDES, SULPHATES AND CARBONATES. THE SOIL SUPPORTS THE ALL PLANTS, ANIMALS AND MICRO ORGANISMS. SO WE CAN SAY THAT SOIL IS A GOOD HABITAT.
HORIZON OF SOIL
SOIL IS MADE UP OF DISTINCT HORIZONTAL LAYERS. THESE LAYERS ARE KNOW AS HORIZONS. THEY RANGE FROM RICH, ORGANIC LAYER OF SOILS ( HUMUS AND TOP SOIL) TO UNDERLYING ROCKY LAYERS ( SUB SOIL , REGOLITH AND BEDROCK).
> O HORIZON - THE TOP, ORGANIC LAYER OF SOIL, MADE UP MOSTLY OF LEAF LITTER AND HUMUS ( DECOMPOSED ORGANIC MATTER ).
> A HORIZON - THE LAYER CALLED TOPSOIL; IT IS FOUND BELOW THE O HORIZON AND ABOVE THE E HORIZON. SEEDS GERMINATES AND PLANTS ROOTS GROW IN THIS DARK COLOURED LAYER. IT IS MADE UP OF HUMUS( DECOMPOSED ORGANIC MATTER ) MIXED WITH MINERAL PARTICLES.
> E HORIZON - THIS ELUVIATION (LEACHING ) LAYER IS LIGHT COLOUR. THIS LAYER IS BENEATH THE A HORIZON AND ABOVE THE B HORIZON. IT IS MADE UP MOSTLY OF SAND AND SILT, HAVING LOST MOST OF ITS MINERALS AND CLAY AS WATER DRIPS THROUGH THE SOIL (IN PROCESS OF ELUVIATION )
> B HORIZON - IT IS ALSO KNOW AS THE SUB SOIL. THIS LAYER IS BENEATH THE E HORIZON AND ABOVE THE C HORIZON. IT CONTAINS CLAY AND MINERALS DEPOSITS (LIKE IRON, ALUMINIUM OXIDES AND CALCIUM CARBONATE ) THAT IT RECEIVES FROM LAYERS ABOVE IT WHEN MINERALIZED WATER DIPS FROM THE SOIL ABOVE.
> C HORIZON - ALSO CALLED REGOLITH! THE LAYER BENEATH THE B HORIZON AND ABOVE THE R HORIZON. IT CONSISTS OF SLIGHTLY BROKEN-UP- BED ROCKS. PLANTS ROOTS DO NOT PENETRATE INTO THIS LAYER; VERY LITTLE ORGANIC MATERIALS IS FOUND IN THIS LAYER.
> R HORIZON - THE UNWEATHERED ROCK ( BED ROCK) LAYER THAT IS BENEATH ALL THE OTHER LAYERS. THESE DIFFERENT LAYERS OF SOIL ARE CALLED SOIL PROFILE.
I HOPE THIS WILL HELP'S U..............*-*
