Purehydrogencan be obtained from water gas by using thewater gas shift reaction, after subsequent removal of the carbon dioxide formed when carbon monoxide reacts with water.

The water-gas shift (WGS) reaction (CO + H2O = CO2+ H2) is used in industrial hydrogen production as well as an integral component of fuel processing for fuel cell applications.
