Adsorption theory of catalysis is applied for heterogeneous catalysis. It is believed to take place through the following steps:
1) Chemisorption: Chemisorption of gaseous reactants on surface of solid catalyst may take place in two different ways. The gaseous reactants may be chemisorbed as such or may undergo fragmentation and the fragments may then be chemisorbed on the surface of solid catalyst.
2) Diffusion and chemical reaction : The reactants are diffused towards the surface where they either react to form the products which are adsorbed on the surface of the catalyst or first they form intermediate with the surface of the catalyst which then decompose to form the final products.
3) Desorption : The products formed on the surface of the catalyst are desorbed.
