The impact of the Great Depression on Germany
The Weimar Republic heavily relied on the US economy because it's economy was based on the huge loans created by the Dawes Plan in 1924 and in 1929 the Young Plan, therefore the Wall Street crash had a repercussion on the German economy and thus the German Society. These plans had "pumped" money in the German economy and made it run again, when US's economy collapsed US gave Germany 90 days to start to re-pay money loaned to her. The war reparations, the loan re-payments and the absence of capital in the German economy caused a Great Depression in Germany. The Germany economy was also based on the export of goods towards the US and as soon as the Depression influenced the US economy, German exports were stopped.
These factors caused huge unemployment, especially in the industrial areas of the Ruhr, because companies went bankarupt and therefore the workers were let off. This crisis was hugely damaging for the German society because a few years earlier hyperinflation had caused significant problem to the German standard of living. From 650 00 people unemployed in 1928 to approximately 6 million unemployed in January 1933- ( www.historylearningsite.co.uk.weimar_depression_1929.htm).
Agriculture was also influenced, crops price had been falling since 1929 and with the collapse of agricultural prices farmers found themselves in a very difficult situation in 1932.
