The products obtained at platinum electrodes of aq. K_{2}SO_{4} during electrolysis are oxygen and hydrogen.

What happens in Electrolysis?

  • In electrolysis, ionic products (in the electrolyte) are broken down into their constituent ions when electric current is passed through them.
  • The cationic part of the electrolyte goes to Cathode to get reduced.
  • The anionic part of the electrolyte goes to Anode to get oxidized.

Components of aqueous K_{2}SO_{4} :

  • K^{+} cation and SO_{4}^{-2} anion
  • H^{+} and OH^{-} ion due to water component

Reaction at anode:

H_{2}O is much easier to oxidize than SO_{4}^{-2}. So

2H_{2}O \rightarrow O_{2} + 4H^{+} + 2e^{-}

Product at anode is oxygen gas.

Reaction at cathode:

H_{2}O much easier to reduce than K^{+}. So

H_{2}O + 2e^{-} \rightarrow H_{2} + OH^{-}

Product at cathode is Hydrogen gas.

So, the products obtained at platinum electrodes of aq. K_{2}SO_{4} during electrolysis are oxygen and hydrogen.
