Explanation:

The interpretation of Snell's law is that, light tends to travel through the path through which it takes the shortest time.

Now, one might think that the shortest path between 2 points is the line joining them. And that's why light travels in a straight line in one medium. But that's not the case, when it changes the medium. Then the shortest path won't take the shortest time, since the speed of the light is different in both media. So the path which light takes is perfect balance between speed and distance so that the time required is minimum. And that path is related to the refractive index of the material as given by the Snell's law.
