i think Like many metals magnesium reacts with dilute acids to produce hydrogen plus the magnesium salt of the acid. e.g.
Mg + 2HNO3 ----> Mg(NO3)2 +H2
However, if concentrated nitric acid is used magnesium reacts violently to produce oxides of nitrogen (NO & NO2), as the nitric acid is reduced by the magnesium, which is a strong reducing agent;-
Mg + 2HNO3 ---> MgNO3 + NO2 + H2O
