Rules of aromaticity or huckels rule:

1) The compound should show cyclic resonance.

2) It should have (4n+2) pi electrons in resonance.

The three rules of aromaticity are useful in predicting whether a particular compound is aromatic or non-aromatic.

(1) Aromatic compounds are cyclic and planar (all atoms in ring are sp^2 hybridized.)

(2) Each atom in aromatic ring has a p-orbital. The p-orbitals must be parallel so that continuous overlap is possible around the ring

(3) The cyclic molecular orbital formed by overlap of p-orbitals must contain (4n+2) p electrons, where n integer 0, 1, 2, 3, etc.
