The symmetry element of SOClF

  • Its symmetry is composed of a horizontal plane, a central point of inversion, and a vertical rotation axis. The symmetry of a molecule is determined by the presence of symmetry operations that are performed with regard to symmetry elements.
  • A symmetry element is a line, plane, or point in or through an object that, upon rotation or reflection, produces an orientation of the object that is exactly the same as the original.
  • The five different types of symmetry operations are identity, reflection, inversion, correct rotation, and improper rotation. The erroneous rotation is the result of adding a rotation and a reflection.
  • A symmetry operation is an action that, when finished, leaves an object with the same appearance. For instance, a water molecule will maintain its structure if rotated by 180 degrees about an axis passing through the centre O atom (located between the two H atoms).
