Heya,

Valency is the combining capacity of a element.

Valency ;

Bromine(35)
Electronic configuration = 2, 8, 18, 7
Valency = 8 - 7 = 1

Iodine (53)
Electronic configuration = 2, 8, 18, 18, 7
Valency = 8 - 7 = 1

Gold (79)
Electronic configuration = 2, 8, 18, 32, 18, 1
Valency = 1

Mercury (80)
Electronic configuration = 2, 8, 18, 32, 18, 2
Valency = 2

Hope this helps....:)
