SONAR is simply making use of an echo. When an animal or machines makes a noise,it sends sound waves into the environment around it.Those waves bounce off nearby objects, and some of them reflect back to the object that made the noise.

Answer: The word' Sonar' stands for' SOund Navigation And Ranging'. Sonar is a apparatus which is used to find the depth of a sea or to locate the under-water things like shoal of fish, and enemy submarines.
working of sonar:
sonar work by sending short bursts of ultrasonic sound from a ship down into sea- water and then picking of the echo produced by the reflection of ultrasonic sound from under -water object like bottom of sea shoal .The time taken for the echo to return the ship is measured by the Sonar Apparatus .the distance of the underwater object is then calculated from the time taken by the Echo to return. the time it takes for and echo to return is used to find out how far away something is.
