This law was passed by Parliament on 15 June 2005 and came fully into force on 12 October 2005. Under the provisions of the Act, any citizen of India may request information from a "public authority" (a body of Government or "instrumentality of State") which is required to reply expeditiously or within thirty days. The Act also requires every public authority to computerise their records for wide dissemination and to proactively certain categories of information so that the citizens need minimum recourse to request for information formally.

Yes, the RTI act 2005 is most powerful weapon of citizens in a Democratic nation like india. Because through this we can applied for the information details of any government implemented laws, and any project. OK now let's take an example. In 1976 in Bhim tahashil in Rajasthan a development project started. Contractor of this project committed to pay 40 rs wages per day. But after they paid only 20 rs wages per day. Hence, people demanded to check the details of project and their budget and all expenditure. Hence, this bill was introduced in Parliament in 2002. During AV Bajpei Government. But because of controversy it was not implemented. But later in 2005 during the prime ministry of Dr. Manmohan Singh it was implemented.
