Rutherford model of atom:

⏩observations:

  1. most of the Alpha particles pass through the gold foil undeflected.
  2. a small fraction of the Alpha particles were deflected by small angles.
  3. a very few Alpha particles ( nearly 1 in 20,000) bounce back that is, what deflected by nearly 180°.

⏩on the basis of the observations,Rutherford drew the following conclusions regarding the structure of atom:

  • most of the space in the atom is empty as most of the Alpha particles pass through the foil undeflected.
  • a few positively charged Alpha particles were deflected .the positive charge has to be considered in a very small volume that repel and deflected the positively charged Alpha particles.
  • calculation by Rutherford show that the volume occupied by nucleus is negligibly small as compared to the total volume of the atom...
