Acid lava comes from composite cone volcanoes, is slow moving and viscous. Basic lava comes from shield volcanoes, is runny and flows faster. Acidic lava is felsic, or high in quartz and potassium feldspars. Basic lava is mafic, and higher in plagioclase feldspar.

Three characteristics of Acid lava. And three characteristics of Basic lava.

Explanation:

  • Acid lava : Acid lava comes from composite cone volcanoes, is slow moving and viscous.

Acid lava is molten material flowing from a volcanic vent. Acid lava is high in silicates, viscous, and doesn’t flow far. It creates a steep sided dome.

Example of acid lava dome is Mt Lassen (California, USA).

  • Basic lava :  Basic lava comes from shield volcanoes, it runs and flows faster.

As basic lava is non-viscous, it can reach very far from the vent before it finally cools down and solidifies. Therefore, basic lava cones have short height, concave slopes and large base area.

Example of volcanoes producing this type of lava are those forming Hawaiian island chain
