The characteristic features of organisms belonging to phylum Arthropoda are as follows:  

1) They have jointed legs

2) Respiration occurs through trachea

3) Body is differentiated into head, thorax and abdomen

Since, all these features are present in butterflies, they are classified in the phylum Arthropoda.
