The function of a tendril is to stabalise the plant as it grows these are thin side shoots that grow out until they reach something and then will grow around it several times and so hangs on . This prevents the plant from being pulled or blown in any direction that could damage what normally is a soft brittle growing tip at the top . It's tendrils will often attach to competitors growing along side and so restrict competition growth and allow it to grow faster and stronger .
