Low sex ratio in India can be due to the following reasons:
i. Literacy / education: Low literacy levels and lack of education is the most important reason for low female ratio in our country. Therefore due to lack of education and social awareness about equality of both sexes people hold stereotypical beliefs and prefer males over females.
ii. Nutritional health patterns: In India, females are provided with poor nutrition while males are given better diets. As a result many females die due to improper health care.
iii. Female infanticide: A major reason persisting even in modern era. Many people, even educated ones feel that girl child is a burden and hence kill them in the mother’s womb itself, not even giving a chance of survival.
iv. Social status: Women in India are usually viewed as dowry burdens, weaker gender, and worthy of a lower social status as compared to men.
