1. GOVERNMENT
The Sri Lankan government established Sinhala supremacy. They also favoured Sinhala applicants for government jobs and posts using preferential policies. Adoption of parliamentary democracy with majoritarian rule where Tamil could never gain majority in the system.

2.SOCIAL INEQUALITY
Discrimination towards Tamils . Sinhalese language made the only official language in 1956. Tamil made to resign from government jobs. Restriction for Tamils in college education, Tamil media and literature were banned. This lead to riots in 1956, '58, '87 and 83.

3.BRITISH IN SRI LANKA
Although many Sinhala nationalists may not agree with this view, most historians say that the roots of the conflict stem from the "divide and rule" policy adopted by the British during their occupation of Sri Lanka. Correspondence filed in London's British Library gives credence to this claim.
