Answer:

Explanation:

Ninety-seven percent of all water on the earth is salt water, which is not suitable for drinking.

Only 3% of water on Earth is fresh water, and only 0.5% is available for drinking.

The other 2.5% of fresh water is locked in ice caps, glaciers, the atmosphere, soil, or under the earth's surface, or is too polluted for consumption.

Answer:

The following points may help you :

  • Water is available in abundance, around three fourth of earth is covered with water. However, only a small  proportion of it actually accounts for fresh water which can be put to use rest is saline water not suitable for human consumption.
  • Water is a scarce resource and a life sustaining resource.

Water scarcity is the result of following factors:

  • Over exploitation of water due to excessive irrigation.
  • Growing population, Industrialisation and Urbanisation.
  • Unequal distribution of  water among different social groups. The poor in the rural areas blame the state machinery of diverting water in urban areas and benefiting the rich.
  • Deteriorating quality of water due to pollution, dumping of chemical and industrial waste, garbage dumping.
  • Water scarcity is also impacted by the amount of precipitation which varies from area to area.
