Cutting vegetables is possible with knife as the area of the edge is quite sharp and thin and so when we apply regular force it can easily cut through vegetable as area decreases pressure increases resulting in the cutting of vegetables.

Buildings on the ground can stand in spite of being so heavy because the area of base on which the building stands is large and as area increases the pressure decreases so the ground isn't affected and the buildings can stand well without sinking in (same application can be used with a person on a quick sand)
