the basic difference between electrolytic and electrochemical cell

electrochemical cell convert chemical energy to electrical energy ,it is based on spontaneous redox reaction and the electrodes[both are different] are placed in different beaker with different electrolyte which is connected by a salt bridge. eg- galvonic cell

electrolytic cell convert electrical energy to chemical energy, the redox reaction take place only if electricity is passed, the reaction takes place in a single beaker with the same electrolyte the electrodes may or maynot be the same

Differences between electrochemical

cell and electrolytic cell :

  • Electrochemical cell : It is a device which converts chemical energy into electrical energy.
  • Electrolytic cell : It is a device which converts electrical energy into chemical energy.

  • In this case, the redox reaction is spontaneous.
  • The redox reaction is non-spontaneous and electrical energy is supplied to make the reaction occur.

  • The two half cells are set up in different containers and are connected through salt bridge.
  • Both the electrodes are placed in the solution or molten electrolyte in the same container.

  • In electrochemical cell, anode is negative and cathode is positive.
  • In electrolytic cell, anode is positive and cathode is negative electrode.

  • The electrons move from anode to cathode in external circuit.
  • The electrons are supplied by the external battery and enter through cathode and come out through anode.
