Two examples of Newton's first law

  1. When a bullet is fired from a gun, its motion is opposed both by air and gravity. Sooner or later it returns to Earth. If air resistance and gravitation could be eliminated, the bullet would go on moving in a straight line forever.
  2. A person riding a bicycle along a level roads does not come to rest immediately when he stops paddling. The bicycle continues to move forward but eventually it comes to rest as a result of retarding action of air resistance and friction.

Two examples of Newton's third law

  1. Man jumping out of a boat: If a man standing on a boat at rest jumps to the shore, the boat moves away from the shore. Here, force on the man is reaction and the force exerted on the boat is the action.
  2. Motion of a boat: When a boatman pushes at the water backwards with his oar, the water exerts an equal and opposite force on the oar which is the reaction force and makes the boat move. Here, action is the force exerted by the oar on the water and reaction is the force exerted by the shore on the oar.
