Answer:

The process of osmosis concerns the flow of a solvent, such as water, through a semipermeable membrane. The membrane lets the solvent pass but it blocks dissolved substances in the solvent. If the concentration of dissolved chemicals is higher on one side of the membrane, osmosis forces the solvent to the side with the higher concentration of dissolved chemicals. Osmosis dilutes the high-concentration side and increases the concentration of the low-concentration side until the two sides are balanced.

The process of movement of water from higher concentration to lower concentration through plasma membrane is called osmosis.

For ex.

  • if an object is kept in hypertonic solution the cell loses water and shrinks if cell is kept in hypotonic solution the cell swells up.
