Two examples of submerged aquatic plants are:

i)   Myriophyllum spicatum (known as spiked water milfoil) which are attached to a substrate by roots.  

ii)   Ceratophyllum demersum (known as hornwort) which do not have a root system.  

The modification or adaptations in the roots, stems and leaves of these plants are as follows:

i)   Roots are highly reduced structures. They are used only for attachment or are lost.

ii)   The stems are usually flaccid or limp ad they do not have any major function to support the plant structure.  

iii)  The leaves of these plants are thin and narrow.
