Strictly speaking, the main feature of imperialism is that it is a populated land mass with an Emperor as ruler. However, the word has come to mean the creating of an empire of any sort, economic or political. In imperialist systems there is a dominant and central power, governing an extensive and often extended population. The power operates to its own purposes with a lesser interest in the people inhabiting the empire, citizens or employees, beyond their capacity to contribute to those purposes. An empire’s distinction is that the hierarchy of power arrives finally at a single person with absolute power. Otherwise it’s an oligarchy or some other form of shared power structure, such as democracy.
