Encapsulation. Well all layers more or less have it.
Dealing with errors (some protocols)
They have unique names for data units: frames and segments
They both have sublayers
Link layer is divided into LLC and MAC
My research involves Multipath TCP which essentially introduces MPTCP (the protocol) as a sublayer. Ha! If you try hard enough, even L5 can have sublayers.
