- Carbohydrates are the main source of energy. Sugar and starch are the two important carbohydrates found in our food.
- There are two groups of carbohydrates - simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates.
- Simple carbohydrates are also known as sugars. Sugars are found in fruits, such as apples, grapes, plums, banana and peas. Honey also contains sugar. Sugar is also added to sweet food items like biscuits and candies.

- Fats produce more energy than carbohydrates, our body takes longer to break down fats than carbohydrates. Thus, fats do not serve a quick supply of energy. Fats keep the body warm. Some fats carry vitamins to body cells.
- They also cushion the internal organs. Plants sources of fats are in the form of vegetable oil and nuts. We get vegetable oils from coconut, groundnut, mustard and sunflower.
- Extra fat stored under the skin and around the heart and kidneys. Excessive intake of fats causes excess body weight and heart diseases.
