Two Reasons could be:

Long ago, (for a very long period in time) it was “Destination India” for the traders. They all mapped their routes and the ocean that they crossed after the Cape of Good Hope, must have named it Indian Ocean, as they were focusing on getting to India, via Sea Route! Many European Countries viz., UK, France, Portugal, were invading various parts of the world by first opening their trade routes to countries! India was a hot cake those days, as there was immense wealth, knowledge, spirituality and what not.

When a lot of people keep travelling back-and-forth, they must have communicated with one-another for ease of understanding of the route and other business things. I think, “Indian Ocean” is also coined by those invaders! As no one questioned this, it just became the name!

India Ocean named after our country because:-

  • No other country has a long coastline on the Indian Ocean as India has.

  • India has a central location between the East and the West Asia.
