Answer:

Sugar is a pure substance because its composition is homogeneous throughout. Pure substances can be either elements or compounds. Sugar or sucrose is a compound with the chemical formula C12H22O11.

Sugar is a pure substance and not a mixture becuase:

  1. It is a homogenous mixture:
  • Homogenous mixture refers to a mixture where the molecules in the mixtures are distributed evenly. The composition of every molecule is uniform.
  • Sugar molecule has a very evenly distributed structure and same amount of 'X' atom is always present in all divided sections of the molecule.

2. The atoms making up sugar cannot be separated:

  • It is impossible to separate all the atoms from C6H12O6 formula of sugar.
  • As it can't be easily separated, we consider it to be a substance and not a mixture as all mixtures can be separated.
