Give two reasons why both the strands of DNA are not copied during transcription.

The simple answer is that each gene is only encoded on one strand - the "sense" strand. The complimentary "antisense" strand is actually used as a template for building the mRNA. Different genes may be encoded on opposite strands, and may even overlap.
