ATP stands for the organic compound , \bold{Adenosine\:Triphosphate} . These are the energy rich compounds synthesized mostly by the mitochondria hence leading to the naming of it as power house of the cell .

Adenosine Triphosphate is generally known as energy carrier or energy currency of the cell . It is a common cellular fuel , that is , it is used to carry out numerous energy - requiring processes of the cell .

The body of an organism uses the energy stored in adenosine triphosphate for the following reasons :-

1. Synthesis of chemical compounds like DNA ( Deoxyribonucleic Acid ) replication , transcription of RNA ( Ribonucleic Acid ) , and synthesis of proteins , carbohydrates amd lipids ( fats ) .

2. Mechaninal work such as contraction of muscles (movement , locomotion) , movement of cilia and flagella , conduction of nerve impulse and production of heat , electricity ( in electric eel ) and light ( in fireflies ) .
