Answer:

Principle quantum number = n

Explanation:

Principle quantum number refers to the orbits of an atom.

In quantum mechanics, the principal quantum number (symbolized n) is one of four quantum numbers which are assigned to all electrons in an atom to describe that electron's state. As a discrete variable, the principal quantum number is always an integer. As n increases, the number of electronic shells increases and the electron spends more timefarther from the nucleus. As n increases, the electron is also at a higher energy and is, therefore, less tightly bound to the nucleus. The total energy of an electron, as described below, is a negative inverse quadratic function of the principal quantum number n.

The principal quantum number was first created for use in the semiclassical Bohr model of the atom, distinguishing between different energy levels. With the development of modern quantum mechanics, the simple Bohr model was replaced with a more complex theory of atomic orbitals. However, the modern theory still requires the principal quantum number.

PRINCIPLE QUANTUM NUMBER (n):

This tell about the energy of Shell, determine the size and energy of the orbital. There is always a positive integer value for n like n=1,2,3...

the Principal Quantum Number gives following information:

  • It tell about the shell to which electron belongs.

for example of electron with principle quantum number n=1 will belong to first shell. Similarly the electron with principle quantum number n= 3 will belong to third shell around the nucleus.

  • It specifies the size of the shell.

The size of the orbital is always directly proportional to the principal quantum number. This means as the value of principle quantum number increases the size of the cell increases therefore now the electron will be away from the nucleus.

  • It tells about the energy of the shell.

Principal Quantum Number alone determine the energy of the shell of the atom. Therefore larger the distance of the shell in which electrons are present, higher will be its energy.
