Xenophobia in India is deep-rooted and is not treated as a serious criminal act against the perpetrators which has created room for bullies, racists, and bigots. Xenophobia in India is played out through class, caste, complexion, and nationality. The rate of Xenophobia has been on the rise due to; economic reasons i.e. competition for resources, psycho-social reasons, as well as historical, political, and institutional reasons. Recently xenophobia attacks against African students in India have been on the rise to the attention of African Heads of Mission. For instance, ordinary Indians regard dark-skinned people as inferior, while those with lighter complexion are perceived to be endemic to the Indian society. The government of India has the mandate to protect all non-citizens despite their complexion or colour.
