Given below are melting pt and at. Radii of elements x y and z ,each having an electrons in the outermost shell of their atom:

X melting =1.34. atomic radii =. 1.20

Y melting =1.54. atomic radii = 1.31

Zmelting = 1.96. atomic radii = 1.36

Will the valencies of the elements be same or different and why?

Which element will have highest atomic no. and why?

Arrange the elements in increasing order of their metallic character?

As all the elements have same no.of electrons they have same valency. They belong to the same group in periodic table.

The element with highest atomic radius will have the largest atomic number.

Similarly, metallic character is decided by the size of atom of the element. The largest atom will most probably have the max. metallic character. ( elements having tendency to lose electrons easily have highest metallic character.)
so the order is X < Y < Z.

In periodic table, metallic character increases down the groups and decreases from left to right in a period.

Answer:

(a) Given the each element has an e −   in the outermost shell. ∵ They have same number of e  −   in the outermost shell. ∴ , they belong to the same group.

(b) Element with highest atomic radii will have highest atomic no. i.e. Z.

(c) As we have inferred above the atomic radii is in the order Z>Y>X. So, metallic character order is also the same, i.e. Z>Y>X.
