Calculating the mean deviation and its Coefficient using the median of data

Explanation:

The median of a series can be determined by arranging its items in ascending order as below:

Srl Marks D (Deviation from Median)

1 11  15

2 16  10

3 17  9

4 19  7

5 25  1

6 27  1

7 35  9

8 38  12

9 40  14

10 42  16

So for the given data Sigma (Σ) D = 94

  • Median = Size of (N+1)th item
  • Median = (10+1)/2 = 5.5th item
  • Hence Median = (25 + 27) / 2 = 26
  • Mean deviation = Σ (d) / N = 94/10 = 9.4
  • Co-efficient of Mean Deviation = Mean deviation/ Median

 = 9.4 / 26 = 0.36
