\large{\underline{\rm{\red{The\:ozone\;hole:-}}}}

→ On Antarctica depletion of ozone layer commonly known as ozone hole over the South Pole.

→ It was found that a unique set of conditions was responsible for the ozone hole.

→ During summer season, nitrogen dioxide and methane react with chlorine monoxide and chlorine atoms forms chlorine sinks.

→ It helps in preventing much ozone depletion.

→ Well, in winter, special type of clods called polar statspheric clouds are formed over Antartica.

→ Basically, the polar stratospheric clouds provide surface on which chlorine nitrate formed gets hydrolysed to form hypochlorous acid.

→ It also reacts with hydrogen chloride produced as per reaction to give molecular chlorine.

Equations :-

1) ClO(g) + NO(g) → ClONO2(g)

2) Cl(g) + CH4(g) → CH3(g) + HCl(g)

3) ClONO2(g) + H2O(g) → HOCl(g) + HNO3(g)

4) ClONO2(g) + HCl(g) → Cl2(g) + HNO3(g)
