SOLUTION

GIVEN

f(x) = 2x²- 5x - 12 and g(x) = 2x + 3

TO DETERMINE

The value of ( f + g) ( - 2)

EVALUATION

Here the given functions are

f(x) = 2x²- 5x - 12 and g(x) = 2x + 3

Now

f(x) = 2x²- 5x - 12

⇒ f( - 2) = 2 × ( - 2)²- 5 × ( - 2) - 12

⇒ f(- 2) = 8 + 10 - 12

⇒ f(- 2) = 6

Again

g(x) = 2x + 3

⇒ g( - 2) = 2 × ( - 2) + 3

⇒ g( - 2) = - 4 + 3

⇒ g( - 2) = - 1

Thus we get

( f + g) ( - 2)

= f( - 2) + g( - 2)

= 6 - 1

= 5
